Australia gives dissident Chinese diplomat permanent visa Fri Jul 8, 3:52 AM ET Australia has granted fugitive former Chinese diplomat Chen Yonglin a permanent visa allowing him to stay in the country indefinitely, the immigration ministry said Friday. A spokesman for Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone said Chen, his wife and six-year-old daughter had been granted permanent protection visas. "It was granted today and means they can permanently live in Australia," he told AFP. Chen abandoned his post as first secretary at the Chinese consulate-general in Sydney in late May to seek political asylum in Australia, accusing Beijing of running a ring of more than 1,000 spies in the country and expressing fears for his safety if he was sent home. Chen had previously been given a temporary "bridging" visa which he said meant he still faced being sent back to China. Greens senator Bob Brown, one of Chen's major supporters during his asylum bid, said the former diplomat and his family were delighted at the news and wanted to thank the people of Australia for their support. "The granting of permanent visas for Chinese diplomat and defector Chen Yonglin and his wife and daughter is due to huge public sentiment which swept in to rescue him," Brown said in a statement. "Chen and his family will be valuable Australian residents. I congratulate him. His conscience and his courage have been rewarded by this nation if not its government." Officials in Canberra insisted from the outset that Chen's application would be processed in the same manner as all other asylum seekers, leading to allegations from critics that the government was worried about damaging valuable trade ties with China. Vanstone's spokesman said the visas were granted through normal processes and the minister had not intervened in the case. Chinese Ambassador Fu Ying this week accused Chen of greed and said he had lied about his homeland.
